Artisans receive state awards
SHILLONG: Five artisans were awarded the State Handicrafts Awards, 2017-18 at a function held at the Department of Commerce and Industries on Friday. The winners are Kretis Rynjah from Madan Laban, Albina Jyrwa from Tynnai village in South West Khasi Hills, Clement Sangma from Mendal in North Garo Hills, Daisy Christine G. Momin, Chandmary in West Garo Hills and Ram Kynjing Panaliar, Jowai, West Jaintia Hills. Speaking at the function, Commissioner & Secretary, MR Synrem said the artisans can also cater to bulk orders for people who want to order handicrafts from the state. He encouraged the artisans to participate in national awards. “We have the talent, capacity and capability and we have to work hard and do well but we need to persevere,” he said. Synrem asked the five artisans to share and contribute their skills with others. Handicrafts sector has been one of the means of livelihood for the tribes of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo communities.
SHG rally at Williamnagar
TURA: With a view to create awareness on Deendayal Antyodaya Yojna-National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAY-NULM) Pakwada named Shehri Samridhi Utsav, launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Williamnagar Municipal Board (WMB) organised a rally of self help groups registered under it on Friday at Williamnagar. Following the rally, an awareness program-cum-loan camp on Shehri Samridhi Utsav was also held at DRDRA Hall where 83 members out of 35 registered SHGs attended. The camp was held with an aim to reach out to the weaker sections of the society, to showcase the initiatives of the board and to facilitate the SHGs in availing other government schemes.
Demand for hospital in Jowai
SHILLONG: A concerned citizen, Stelin G. Laloo has criticised the shifting of Jowai Civil Hospital to Ialong at the behest and pressure of Jaintia Students Union and said it was a hasty decision taken by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. He also blamed former MLA of Jowai, S. Mulieh stating that instead of constructing a new building for Jowai Civil Hospital at the existing site, the former MLA started the construction of the hospital at his village in Ialong. He expressed hope that the MDA government would look over the matter again as Jowai town deserves a Civil Hospital. He asserted that Jowai is the only district headquarter which does not have a civil hospital.
Bid to deceive West Khasi Hills DC in poll panel’s name
SHILLONG: The West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, T Lyngwa, has filed a police complaint after unknown persons tried to deceive his office in the name of Election Commission of India. Lyngwa lodged a complaint saying he had received a letter from the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Election Commission of India (ECI), in connection with the forthcoming election to the Lok Sabha, with instruction to preclude all internet connections on polling and counting days. The letter also commented on the credibility of the EVMs being used by ECI for conduct of the election. Following this, the complainant took up the matter with the ECI and found that there was no such instruction given by the ECI. During enquiry, it transpired that intentional deception in the name of ECI was done by unknown accused person(s).
