GUWAHATI:  Property including goods and machinery worth several lakhs of rupees were damaged in a fire that broke out in the 132 KV powerhouse on Tuesday morning in Nowgong Paper Mill of Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) in Jagiroad in Marigaon district of Assam.

It took about two hours for several fire engines to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire was yet to be pinpointed even as police suspect that an electrical short circuit could have cause the fire.

The paper mills along with Cachar Paper Mill of the HPC have remained closed for a long period with hundreds of employees going without pay for months. The employees have been agitating demanding re-opening of both the mills but to no avail.
