Syrian President Bashar Assad speaks during a meeting with heads of local councils from all Syrian provinces in Damascus on Sunday. Assad said that only the Syrian army can protect groups in northern Syria. He also appeared to be referring to US-allied Kurdish groups, which fear a Turkish assault once American troops withdraw from northeastern Syria. (PTI)
