Pak national killed in brawl in Jaipur prison: Officials
Jaipur: A Pakistani national lodged in the central jail here was allegedly killed Wednesday in a brawl with other prisoners. “A Pakistani prisoner was allegedly murdered today in the central jail. The matter will be investigated by a judicial magistrate and also by the police,” Rajasthan Director General of Police Kapil Garg told PTI. The killing in Jaipur prison has been reported amid heightened tension between India and Pakistan after the Pulwama terror attack. An official said Shakrullah (50), who was from Pakistan Punjab’s Sialkot, was hit with a large stone during the prison fight. Inspector general (Prisons) Rupinder Singh said Shakrullah was lodged in the jail’s special cell since 2011 and was serving life sentence under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Senior administration and police officials rushed to the jail after learning about the death. Singh said the post mortem will be conducted on the jail premises under judicial supervision. (PTI)
Kashmiri students suspended in U’khand for anti-national posts
Dehradun: Seven Kashmiri students have been suspended by Roorkee-based Quantum Global University for their alleged anti-national posts on social media, a university official said. The action was taken on Tuesday after around 450 students gathered on the campus demanding their expulsion for allegedly posting anti-national slogans on Facebook and Instagram, Registrar of the University RK Khare said. The protesting students threatened to leave the institute if the Kashmiri students were not expelled, he said. “We had to suspend the Kashmiri students to pacify the protesting students and stop them from leaving,” he said. He said the matter is under investigation and stern action will be taken against those found guilty. Quantum Global University is a private university based in Bhagwanpur area of Roorkee in Haridwar district. (PTI)
Four burned alive in blaze caused by LPG cylinder blast
Nashik (Maha): Four members of a family, including two children, were charred to death in a fire triggered by explosion of a domestic LPG cylinder in Nashik district of Maharashtra, police said Wednesday. The incident occurred Tuesday night in Dhaur village in Dindori taluka, around 30 kms from here, when the family members were asleep after having dinner, a local police official said. The makeshift tin-roof structure in which the family was living suffered extensive damage in the explosion, he said. The official said four members, including a couple and two children, burned alive in fire. It seemed the cylinder was leaking and the gas came into contact with a kerosene lamp in the shed which has no power connection, the official said when asked about the likely cause behind the incident. The deceased persons are identified as Murlidhar Choudhari (32), his wife Kavita (30), their son Tushar (10), and nephew Nayan Choudhari (8), he said. A case of accidental death has been registered by Dindori police and further investigation is underway. (PTI)
NCDRC directs three doctors to pay Rs 2.7 lakh for negligence
New Delhi: The apex consumer forum has directed three doctors to pay Rs 2.7 lakh for “gross-negligence” and “mismanagement” that led to the death of a woman after she suffered a cardiac arrest during an operation and slipped into a coma and never recovered from it. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) said that it was a “serious lapse” on the part of the doctors to not assess the woman’s cardiac condition before the operation. A bench of presiding member Anup K Thakur and member C Vishwanath upheld the district consumer forum’s order asking Doctors Zubedaben Desai, Kashyap Rameshbhai Shah and Rachnaben Jigneshbhai Shah of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to pay Rs 2.7 lakh to Mustafabhai Ibrahimbhai Salar for the death of his wife, Memunaben Salar. According to the complaint, Salar was admitted to Ahmedabad’s Samved hospital on October 20, 2004. She suffered a cardiac arrest during the surgery the next day. She was shifted to another hospital where she remained in coma till her death in 2005. (PTI)
Absconding Congress MLA arrested in assault case
Bengaluru: Congress MLA J N Ganesh was arrested on Wednesday, weeks after he was declared absconding for allegedly assaulting another lawmaker from his party during a brawl at a resort.Ganesh was at large after the alleged assault on Anand Singh, both from Ballari district, on January 20 at the Eagleton Resort on the city outskirts, where the Congress had sequestered its MLAs to prevent a poaching bid by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “Yes, we have arrested him (Ganesh),” Inspector General of Police of the Central range B Dayananda told PTI, replying to a query. Police sources, however, did not confirm from where was the Congress MLA arrested. They said prior to his arrest, a team of about 18 officers had carried out searches in Mumbai, Goa, Ballari and Hyderabad. Ganesh had allegedly attacked Singh with his fists and a flowerpot, hit him near his eye and kicked him on his chest, according to the complaint filed with the police. In his complaint, Singh stated that Ganesh was upset as he suspected that he wanted to finish him off politically and did not support him financially during the Karnataka Assembly polls last year. A seriously injured Singh was admitted to a private hospital in the city. Based on his complaint, the police had registered a case of attempt to murder against Ganesh. Fearing arrest, the Congress MLA did not appear for the crucial budget session of the state legislature, despite a whip. (PTI)
