Postal employee missing with Rs 42 lakh
SHILLONG: A postal employee went missing with Rs 42 lakh after he was instructed to remit the amount with the senior postal official in the city. Karnawaljit Thounaojam, Inspector of Post, South Division, lodged a complaint at Nongstoin police station, West Khasi Hills that on February 12, he deputed his staff identified as Bocherson Mawlieh, Sub-Post Master, to remit Rs 42 lakh to the Senior Post Master, General Post Office, Shillong. However, the money was yet to be received by the Senior Post Master, Shillong and after debiting the money, Mawlieh never reported back for duty.

Man found hanging, cops rule out foul play
NONGSTOIN: A man was found hanging at his residence at Mawkhan Phyllut village in West Khasi Hills on Wednesday. Nongstoin police said they received a phone call from the secretary of the village that one person identified as Transis Wahlang was found hanging. They ruled out foul play after preliminary investigation.Transis’s sister Baidalin Wahlang submitted a written formation and a case has been registered. Later, the relatives approached the ADM for exemption from postmortem. The body was handed over to the family.

Reminder to CM on Dalu demand
Shillong: The representatives of Dalu Civil Sub – Division Joint Movement Committee (DCSJMC) in a press statement to the chief minister reminded him about the grievances faced by the people of Dalu and its adjoining areas. The committee organised a public rally on Tuesday for upgradation of the Dalu sub-division at Dalu Government Higher Secondary School Playground. Students, Nokmas were present during the rally. The committee in the reminder said that it organised a public meeting on July 28, 2018 regarding the upgradation of the Community and Rural Development Block or Dalu Civil Sub – Division where the large gathering demanded for the much needed sub-division. The Dalu Community and Rural Development (C&RD) block is the most oldest block in West Garo Hills even in the entire state. Local MLA Brening Sangma was also present during the meeting. It further stated that people in that area face a lot of difficulties to visit Tura for urgent medical purposes. Transportation is expensive especially for the poor people.

Don Bosco sports week ends today
TURA: The annual sports week of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School in Mendal, North Garo Hills, will come to a close on Thursday. The sports week was kicked off on February 18 with a colourful cultural programme. Bajengdoba BDO R N Sangma, who was the chief guest, had encouraged sporting activities among children for their physical and mental growth. She had stressed on the three ‘Ls’- ‘Learn, Lead and Live’.
Convention on alcoholism
SHILLONG: The Shillong Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) will celebrate 25 years of its formation by hosting the 2nd North East Region AA Convention on Thursday at Multi-use convention, NEHU. AA is commonly known as Alcoholics Anonymous. Addressing a press conference, a member of AA, told reporters that the convention will start with a public information meet on Thursday to be followed by a two-day convention on February 22 and 23. Asked, the member said that 250 participants from various parts of India are expected to take part. Stating that alcoholism is not recognized as a disease in India, the members said, “Alcoholism is a cause of worry in Meghalaya.”Providing a ray of hope for alcoholics, another member said there is a way out for alcoholics.

Oxen seized
Shillong: The office of the Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills informed that on February 10, BSF personnel of Nongkhen BOP seized seven oxen while conducting patrolling along the International Border under Dawki PS jurisdiction. The oxen were intended for smuggling to Bangladesh by unknown culprits who managed to escape taking advantage of the thick forest and the darkness. Hence in this regard, a case was registered vide Dawki PS Case No. 8(2)19 U/S 11 PCA Act. It request the owners or anyone who has information of the owner or culprits or whose oxen were stolen or missing to approach Dawki Police Station for necessary action.

School farewell programme
SHILLONG: Hill View Secondary School organized a farewell programme for the outgoing students of class X by the present class X students. Principal of the school, Arpita Mazumdar addressed the students. The students of different classes showcased their talent by performing a colourful cultural programme. The teachers also presented a song. The outgoing students were presented with mementos and titles like Mr and Ms Hill View were also awarded to the deserving students. The school conveyed their best wishes to the outgoing students who are preparing for their Board examination to be held soon.

NCC reaches out to border areas
SHILLONG: NCC Directorate North East Region has successfully reached out to border and remote areas in its drive to provide opportunities to youth of the region. With 90,000 enrolled cadets, NCC is present in 312 colleges and 813 schools in the seven states. Last year, NCC, under Major General Raju Chauhan, Additional Director General, has increased its visibility. It also focused on nation building and has been at the fore front in all social schemes of government such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
