SHILLONG: United Democratic Party vice-president Allantry Dkhar has come down heavily on the Congress accusing it of spreading canards about his party in its political campaign.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday here, he said the Congress leadership has been blaming the regional parties during political campaigns in Jatah, Mawryngkneng and Jaiaw.
With just a day left for campaigning to end, he asserted that the electorate should vote with proper information and not allow themselves to be misled.
Dkhar criticised the Congress for likening the BJP and UDP which he said is “totally and absolutely wrong.”
“In Assam, the government is led by BJP and it was right for the AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) to pull out, whereas in Meghalaya, the government is led by NPP and ably supported by UDP. The other constituents have nothing to do with UDP. How can they compare with the Assam situation and bombard us here in Meghalaya,” he remarked.
Dkhar also spoke about former Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) president, Ardent Basaiawmoit, for falling prey to misleading campaigns.
Basaiawmoit has been seen in various campaigns of the Congress though he has not joined the party officially.
“Pained to see an old friend Ardent Basaiawmoit, who all along maintained his regionalism.. I do not know what has befallen him. I hope he soon wakes up and sees reality and not fall prey to misleading campaigns,” he said.
Congress and BJP: Two sides of the same coin
Dkhar slammed the two opposing national parties, Congress and BJP, for focusing on vote bank politics.
“BJP and Congress are two sides of the same coin and are more focused on vote bank politics,” he said.
“National parties represent the interest of the nation, so how can they represent a particular tribe,” he added.
Stating that Congress is not an innocent lamb, he cited various media reports which showed Congress was not averse to bringing foreigners to India.
Dkhar said he had stumbled upon a reference about Congress which has adopted a resolution on November 25, 1947 in its working committee.
“The congress is bound to afford full protection to all those non-Muslims from Pakistan who have crossed the border and come over to India and may do so to save their life and honour,” he quoted the sentence from the book India’s struggle for freedom select document and sources by Jagdish Sharma, volume III.
“It is just like the issue of ban on cow slaughter which was initiated in the earlier years by the Congress. Who are they trying to fool?” Dkhar said.
Commenting on CAB, he added that it is not the Congress which has saved the nation and Meghalaya and the stand of the Congress in this regard is totally wrong.
He maintained that the credit should go to NPP and other political parties, students’ organisations and others.
He further pointed out Congress MP Sushmita Dev’s letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing her undivided support to the amendment.
Stating that Dussehra festival is celebrated with pomp and splendor in Bangladesh than in India, Dkhar pointed out it is the Khasis who are persecuted in Bangladesh.
To a query, he said the UDP has officially quit NEDA.
