NOTA gets the better of 3

SHILLONG: The EVMs may have the NOTA (None of the Above) option at the end of the candidates’ list, but it was not overlooked by the electorate with the button taking hits in all the constituencies of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) that went to polls on February 27.
The results of the elections to the two councils declared on Saturday revealed that in the JHADC, NOTA came up trumps against two candidates of Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and People’s Democratic Front (PDF) in Barato-Mukroh constituency.
Both the parties are constituents of the ruling MDA in the state.
The NOTA received 96 ‘votes’ while HSPDP candidate, Currentis Rabon, secured 35 and Susil Dkhar from PDF 60. Another candidate from Jowai-South, Pil Khyriem, also lost out to NOTA securing 49 votes as against 95 of the latter.
In KHADC, KHNAM candidate, Baiateilang Lapang got 103 vote while NOTA has 178 votes, Independent candidate from Sohra, Mattsing Nongrum also got less than NOTA after he secured 90 votes while NOTA has 111 votes, another independent candidate, Wankit Kupar Kharumnuid has 134 votes while NOTA has 313 votes, Donaldson Shanpru secured 51 votes only while the number of votes for NOTA is 154.
