JOWAI: The Lakroh mini hydel project under Amlarem sub-division in Lakroh village was inaugurated by Education Minister and local MLA Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday.
The project was supposed to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma but due to weather conditions, the chopper could not land at Pdein-Shakap village. Sangma then asked the local MLA to inaugurate the project. The 1.5 mega watts project will help the area with grid stability and quality power supply, said the MeECL chairman cum chief managing director, H Nongrum.
The project started in 1996 when the DPR was completed and it was sanctioned in 2001 by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) at the cost of Rs. 11.76 crore.
NEC also provided Rs 5 crore. The project was supposed to start in 2003 but it was delayed since the JHADC could only provide the NOC three years after submission of the application by the MeECL.
Re-survey of the land was also conducted. It was also informed that the project was completed in November 2018 at the cost of 21.43 lakh.
Rymbui, while speaking at the inuagural function, lauded the engineers of MeECL who did not abandon the project despite various obstacles.
The engineers of the power cooperation had the capability to do better and the delay of the Lakroh project is a lesson for them to learn and improve themselves, said Rymbui. West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Garod LSN Dykes and the Dolloi of the Elaka Satpator were also present.
