SHILLONG: Newly elected Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chairman PN Syiem has urged fellow MDCs to thoroughly read the provisions of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Delivering his speech after his election on Thursday, NPP MDC from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah Syiem appealed to the 29 MDCs to adhere to the Assam-Meghalaya District Council Rules.
According to him, having the required knowledge of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India will ensure that the MDCs can legislate, regulate and codify as per its provisions.
“To make room for improvement, there are many things that need to be re-looked,” he said.
Presiding over the session to elect the Chairman, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Matsiewdor War Nongbri, said three nomination papers were received in favour of Syiem.
His name was proposed by Lambor Malngiang, Gigur Myrthong, Alwin Khyriem Sawkmie and seconded by Latiplang Kharkongor, Rangkynsai Kharbuki and Sherborlang Mawlong.
Syiem was elected unopposed as he was the only candidate for the post.
UDP MDC Paul Lyngdoh lauded the fighting spirit of Syiem, who was not discouraged despite losing the general assembly elections last year and the Ranikor bye-poll later.
Pointing to him as a referee of the House, he said that it is expected of the Chairman to function as per the rule book.
