SHILLONG: National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson, Rekha Sharma has said she would like to see more women in Parliament.
Commenting on the Women’s Reservation Bill, 2008, she told reporters here on Friday that the legislators should take at least the first step towards giving space to women in politics.
Let them think of 50 per cent. Women have achieved so much in the past 22 years and have proven their ability in every field. Let the lawmakers take a decision now as the first step, she said.
The over 20-year-old Bill had hit several roadblocks in every time it was introduced in Parliament. “Take back the Women’s Reservation Bill” was among the slogans raised by the SP members from the well of the Rajya Sabha.
Sharma said women in India are more empowered than their counterparts in developed countries, pointing to the posts of prime minister and president having been held by them.
