TURA: NPP candidate for Tura Lok Sabha seat Agatha K Sangma will file her nomination before the returning officer in Tura on Friday.
Confirming this to The Shillong Times on Tuesday night, family sources said the youngest daughter of PA Sangma would be accompanied by her mother Soradini K Sangma, her brothers Conrad Sangma and James Sangma, and a host of NPP leaders, supporters, MLAs and MDCs.
Agatha, who launched her political campaign from the North Garo Hills village of Adokgre on Monday, is pitted against Congress heavyweight Mukul Sangma who, despite victory in successive state elections, has never won the mantle of MP from Tura.
The leader of the opposition in the state assembly and current legislator from Songsak seat in East Garo Hills, Mukul has moved a step ahead of the NPP on the campaign front.
He began canvassing last week holding meetings at different places in Garo Hills, including Rongjeng and Songsak.
During his rally at Rongjeng, three politicians, including sitting MDC Mettrinson G Momin, who was formally with the NPP, joined the Congress.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Agatha rallied supporters at Upper Sasatgre village of Kalchengpara for their party candidate Ferlin C A Sangma, who is contesting the Selsella by-election.
Voters from Selsella will cast their vote for their MLA candidate simultaneously with the MP election on April 11th.
A former Meghalaya government bureaucrat, Ferlin Sangma of the NPP is taking on Congress candidate June Eliana R Marak, widow of Late Clement Marak, whose death last year has led to the holding of the by-poll.
