Mawkyrwat: The Green Volunteers of South West Khasi Hills district in collaboration with the Synjuk ki Seng Samla Shnong (SSSS) and Basin Development Unit (BDU) organised a ‘Walk and Pick’ programme at Mawkyrwat market on Wednesday to change the people’s ‘walk and throw’ mindset and help maintain cleanliness and preserve the environment.
The walk-and-pick started from the premises of Govt. HS School and passed by Nativity HS School, Christian Principle Academy, JKMP Secondary School and Sngap Syiem College before ending at the market.
Speaking after the programme, Extra Assistant Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills district, LK Diengdoh said earlier the Khasis were known to be people who maintained cleanliness.
However, the dirty markets, tourist spots, roadsides and water bodies now show people maintain cleanliness only at home and do not have any responsibility towards society and the environment.
While lauding the efforts of the Green Volunteers, Diengdoh said there was an urgent need to organise a people’s movement against pollution so that environment can be protected.
Others who spoke on the occasion included YG Lyngdoh, member of Sankur Clans, and Junior Engineer of PHE Tyngshain Lyngkhoi.
