GUWAHATI: The convenor of the BJP-floated North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and senior BJP leader in Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has exuded confidence that the BJP along with NEDA constituents will win not less than 19 Lok Sabha seats out of the total 25 seats in the region in the forthcoming election.
“The party has entrusted us to ensure win in maximum number of parliamentary seats in the Northeast this election and we are striving hard to achieve it. We believe that we are going to win not less than 19 seats out of the total 25 Lok Sabha seats in the region. We are very confident of it,” Dr Sarma told media.
It may be mentioned that Dr Sarma has been asked by the BJP leadership to lead the party’s electioneering in the region along with NEDA constituents. The party even asked him not to contest the parliamentary election this time so that he remains free to oversee the party’s electioneering in the region.
Dr Sarma who holds key portfolios of Finance, PWD and Health in the Assam ministry headed by Sarbananda Sonowal, wanted to contest from Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency, but the party leadership wanted him to take charge of overall party’s electioneering in the region.
Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, has expressed confidence that the BJP and its allies will win at least 12 out of the total 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam though the target is to win all the seats in the state.
The BJP is contesting in 10 seats in Assam while its ally AGP is contesting in three seats and another ally Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) is contesting in one seat.
The BJP is fielding candidates from Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tezpur, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Guwahati, Diphu, Mangaldai, Silchar and Karimganj constituencies. The AGP is contesting from Kaliabor, Dhubri and Barpeta while the BPF is contesting from Kokrajhar seat.
