GUWAHATI: A new App named NICetr (Sanskrit word for observer) to track election related information on real time basis has been developed to report malpractices in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Hailakandi district of South Assam.

The new App was inaugurated by District Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli on Monday.

Conceptualised by Scientist (B), National Informatics Centre (NIC), Hailakandi, Monsoor Akhtar on ‘Internet of Things’ based solution to provide information on real time basis to prevent malpractices during election. “It is a homegrown solution uniquely developed by scientist Monsoor Akhtar. The App is the first of its kind in the entire nation. The dashboard helps alert any election related malpractices, including attempts of rigging and booth capturing, ” said Jalli while explaining its finer nuances to the representatives of political parties and media persons.

“We are very proud to have come up with the innovative idea and bring it to fruition,” exuded Jalli.

Battery operated, the App uses motion sensors to track time spent in the voting compartment and alerts if any voter spends too much time in the voting booth. It updates real time data without any human intervention on percentage of voting and number of voters – polling station wise and constituency wise.

Akhtar, the brain behind it all, disclosed that NICetr App will be installed in 10 polling stations initially. Besides, live webcasting will also be carried out from 40 polling stations.

The district administration is for zero percent tolerance against all sorts of electoral malpractices and has asked the political parties to ensure free and fair elections.
