People block Tripura road, demand potable water

Ambassa: Hundreds of inhabitants blocked a road demanding regular supply of potable water as the villagers remained without a single drop of potable water for a month at Jagannathpur in the subdivision of Ambassa in the northern Tripura district of Dhalai here on Friday. Hundreds of villagers from Surendra Riang paragraph at Jagannathpur blocked the Ambassa-Gandacharra road demanding potable water. The irked villagers complained that, a month ago Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) disconnected power supply of the pump for pending bills which provided potable water to the villagers. One of the inhabitants identified as Savita Riang alleged, “We have knocked the panchayat and block authority several times. But nothing has happened. And hence, we have to quench our thirst with impure water from local rivulets and river”. At last, the villagers blocked the road at Jagannathpur this morning. Hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides. Police and block officials from Ambassa RD Block rushed to the spot and after prolonged discussion and assurances blockade ended after two hours. The villagers threatened with further violent movement if the demand not met as per the assurance. (UNI)
