SHILLONG: The youth wing of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has identified a school in the city that is not abiding by the notification of the government on the weight of school bags.
In a statement issued here, KHNAM youth wing president Thomas Passah said it conducted an inspection and found that the bags which students of Mawprem Modern Higher Secondary School were carrying were heavier than the weight limit notified by the government.
“We found that students still carry bags weighing 6-7 kg and children studying in Class II carry bags weighing 4 kg,” the youth wing said.
The principal of the school admitted that they received the government’s notification and said the matter would be addressed.
KHNAM will continue its inspection in different schools.
According to the notification issued by the Education Department on March 11, the weight of school bags for students of classes I and II should not exceed 1.5 kg.
“For students of classes III to V, the weight should not exceed 3 kg and for classes VI to VII, the maximum weight should be 4 kg,” the notification said.
For students of classes VIII to IX, school bags should not weigh more than 4.5 kg and the maximum weight a Class X student can carry is 5 kg.
