GUWAHATI: After missing by five years their self-affixed previous deadline for deporting infiltrators from Assam, BJP national president Amit Shah on Friday sought another five years to detect and deport “every last infiltrator” from the state.
“Under Congress, infiltrators were entering the state. Congress never talked about identifying the infiltrators and deporting them. Give Narendra Modi another five years, and every last infiltrator will be thrown out,” he said, addressing an election rally at Ahatguri in Morigaon, under Nagaon parliamentary constituency, of Assam. Shah further asserted that not only will the infiltrators be deported, but the borders also sealed and secured in such a manner that not even an insect can infiltrate the state.
Modi, during campaign for General Elections in 2014, had announced ensuring deportation of all infiltrators from Assam from May 16, 2104, which was the result day.
The BJP national president maintained that the ongoing updating of National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam was the biggest achievement for the state under Modi’s regime as the NRC will be vital in fighting infiltration. He further alleged that the Congress has filled the state with infiltrators, who are poaching the one-horned rhinos in Kaziranga National Park, and it was the Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government in the state that has now evicted the infiltrators from Kaziranga.
Referring to the six-year-long Assam Movement in which 855 people were martyred, Shah alleged that the Congress did nothing for implementation of the Assam Accord, which was signed as a result of the agitation. “Youths sacrificed their lives here, which had resounded in Gujarat also with the slogan ‘Assam ki galiya suni hai, Indira Gandhi khuni hai’ (Lanes in Assam are deserted, Indira Gandhi is the killer). But no work was done to implement the vital Clause 6 of the Accord, which provides constitutional safeguards to the people,” Shah said. “Modiji has already formed a committee for implementation of Clause 6 and its report will be submitted in six months,” he added.
He dwelt on the developmental schemes undertaken by the Modi government, including Assam-specific measures, and dared the Congress to compare what Manmohan Singh had done for the state in his 10 years as prime minister as he represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha. The BJP has fielded its sitting Nagaon MLA Roopak Sharma from Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, cutting out BJP’s longest service MP from North East region and lone member of the outgoing Union ministry Rajen Gohain from the candidature list. Nagaon will go to the polls in the second phase on April 18 next. (UNI)
