Kid dies after falling off inflatable bouncer
Mumbai: A 10-year-old boy died and four other minors were injured after they fell from an inflatable bouncer in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district, police said Monday. The incident happened on Sunday evening at a spiritual gathering in Kanhergaon in the district, over 500 kilometres from here, a police official said. “The children were playing on an inflatable bouncer which provides a trampoline-like effect when kids jump. However, a gust of wind disbalanced the bouncer due to which the kids fell from a height,” the official informed. He said Manohar Raghoji More, a resident of Sengaon, died instantly while four other children sustained serious injuries. “The injured children were rushed to a nearby hospital. We have registered an accidental death case and a probe is underway,” a Hingoli police station official said. (PTI)
Two arrested for posting wrong info on apex court website
New Delhi: Two Supreme Court staffers have been arrested for allegedly posting wrong information on the apex court’s website related to a case involving Reliance Communications chairman Anil Ambani, police sources said on Monday. The duo allegedly uploaded an order, which said Ambani’s presence in a case had been dispensed with, despite the court ordering that he be present for the next hearing, they said. Senior officers refused to comment on the matter. The accused, identified as Manav and Tapan, who were arrested on Sunday were dismissed earlier by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, they added. The duo are being interrogated, they added. The Supreme Court had sacked the two court officials for tampering with its January 7 order on the issue of personal appearance of Reliance Communication Chairman Anil Ambani in connection with the contempt matter against him. Gogoi passed directions to terminate the services of the two court officials who were responsible for noting the judge’s orders and getting them uploaded on the apex court’s website. (PTI)
SC agrees to look into TikTok row
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said it will look into the order passed by the Madras High Court directing an interim ban on the video mobile application ‘TikTok’. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi sought urgent listing of the case. He said that the application had been downloaded on a major scale, has numerous users and an ex-parte interim order was passed against the start-up. Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said he will look into the matter. Last week, a bench of Justices N. Kirubakaran and S.S. Sundar passed an interim order issuing directions to the government to prohibit downloading the mobile application. It also directed the media not to broadcast the videos made using it. The Madras High Court posed a query to the government. It asked whether the government will enact a statue, like the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act enacted by the US government, in order to prevent children becoming online victims. (IANS)
Undertrial inmate of UP jail dies
Muzaffarnagar: An undertrial prisoner has died at the district jail here due to illness following which a judicial probe has been recommended into the incident, officials said on Monday.Gulfam, a tuberculosis patient, was arrested in 2012 and was facing murder charges, Jail Superintendent AK Saxena said. After his health conditions deteriorated on Sunday, he was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, the officer said. The body has been sent for post-mortem and jail authorities have recommended a judicial probe into the incident, he said. (PTI)
Periyar statue found vandalised
Pudukottai: A life-size statue of rationalist leader and Dravidian movement founder E V Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar, was found vandalised at Aranthangi in the district on Monday, police said. The statue located near the government hospital was found with the head dislodged and lying on the ground, they said. Local leaders of the Dravidar Kazhagam noticed the damage caused to the statue Monday morning and informed police, demanding that the culprits be arrested immediately. Officials said steps were being taken to repair the statue. DMK president M K Stalin condemned the desecration of the statue. “Not only should stern action be taken against whoever be the destructive forces which acted with the intention to disturb peace during election time but they should be crushed with an iron fist,” he said in a tweet. Periyar, who launched the self-respect movement in the state, was a staunch atheist and had founded the Dravidar Kazhagam, the parent organisation of the DMK. (PTI)
Rain worries farmers over wheat crop
Chandigarh: The skies turned dark over parts of Punjab and Haryana on Monday morning with some areas experiencing light rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Darkness descended over Chandigarh and adjoining towns of Panchkula and Mohali, in Haryana and Punjab, respectively, around 8 a.m. The weather continued like this for nearly two hours. Light to moderate rain was experienced in several areas of Chandigarh and neighbouring areas. The sudden change in weather since Sunday night have farmers worried in both agrarian states as the standing wheat crop in the agriculture fields is ready for harvest. While wheat harvesting have begun in some parts of both, the bulk of the crop will be harvested within April. (IANS)
