MAWKYRWAT: Congress candidate from Shillong constituency Vincent H Pala said on Tuesday the Congress alone cannot win the Lok Sabha election.
Addressing a rally at Mawkyrwat market on the last day of campaigning, Pala called upon the supporters of regional parties, especially those whose symbols are not in the EVM, to vote for the Congress, “a party which can protect the interest of the jaitbynriew”.
“I understand that the Congress alone cannot win because the vote bank of the party in the recently concluded MDC election was just about 35 per cent. We need another 20 per cent to win,” Pala said.
While criticising the NPP-led MDA government and especially UDP for working together with BJP, Pala urged the people of South West Khasi Hills not to vote for the UDP. “If you vote for UDP, BJP will rule,” he said.
Reminding the crowd about “harassment of minorities” during the previous BJP regime, Pala said, “In the last five years since the BJP came to power, the life of a cow has become more valuable than that of human in which more than hundreds of cattle traders were killed. The Foreign Contribution Regulation Act of more than 30,000 NGOs in the country mostly Christians were cancelled by the BJP. This is the harassment that we as citizens of this country are facing.”
Respect the unity of NPP
Meanwhile, in another public meeting organised by the MDA partners at Mawkyrwat Market,
Mawkyrwat MLA and HSPDP leader Renikton L Tongkhar called upon the people to respect the “unity” of the NPP, UDP, HSPDP and PDF by voting for Jemino Mawthoh. “We do not ask you to leave your ideology and principles but we ask you to remain within your party with your ideology and principles and vote for Jemino Mawthoh, the candidate of MDA,” Tongkhar said, adding that if all the supporters of the four parties elect Mawthoh, he will easily win.
