SHILLONG: Claims and counter claims have emerged as political parties are busy making calculations on the outcome of the Lok Sabha polls.
Expecting a favourable verdict, Congress candidate Vincent Pala said on Saturday that feedback is yet to come from West Khasi Hills but he is confident of getting maximum votes from six out of seven constituencies in Jaintia Hills.
“But I am not sure of Khliehriat,” Pala said.
According to Pala, though he expects good results in Ri Bhoi, there will be mixed response from East Khasi Hills.
“Pynursla, Shella and a few others may go to the opponent as also Mairang in West Khasi Hills,” he said.
He also does not expect much from South West Khasi Hills.
UDP president Donkupar Roy does not want to make any assessment as he wishes to know the verdict only on May 23, the counting day.
“The feedback from various constituencies is good,” he added.
When asked whether all the coalition partners campaigned for the MDA common candidate Jemino Mawthoh, Roy said there was cooperation from all the parties.
MPCC working president James Lyngdoh said there is a swing in favour of the Congress in both Tura and Shillong.
“The party functionaries of Khasi-Jaintia Hills had a meeting on Saturday to assess the outcome and we also talked to our leaders in Garo Hills on phone. We are winning both Tura and Shillong seats besides Selsella,” James said.
He, however, added that the fight was neck to neck.
NPP state president WR Kharlukhi said as per the district wise assessment, other than the few pockets of North and East Garo Hills, there will be a favourable outcome for NPP candidate Agatha Sangma in other districts of Garo Hills.
In North Garo Hills, Mendipathar is represented by the Congress and in East Garo Hills, Songsak is represented by Mukul Sangma, who is Tura Lok Sabha candidate of the Congress.
“We will also get majority of votes from the plains of Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills,” he said.
BJP leader from Garo Hills KC Boro said the BJP candidate Rikman G Momin is likely to poll over 50,000 votes.
“The purpose of BJP fielding candidates is to make our presence felt and not aimed at winning the polls,” Boro said.
BJP candidate for Shillong seat Sanbor Shullai may garner more votes in the city constituencies as in 2014, the then candidate Shibun Lyngdoh had polled more votes in the urban constituencies.
The assessment of the intelligence agencies in the state gives more edge to the Congress in Shillong LS seat and NPP in Tura and Selsella seats.
