SHILLONG: The outcome of Tura Lok Sabha and Selsella seats will determine the popularity of two leaders from Garo Hills, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his rival and CLP leader Mukul Sangma.
After the 2013 Assembly polls, the NPP faced a humiliating defeat as the seats were reduced to just two.
James Sangma and Nihim D Shira were the only winners in the election from NPP.
This paved the way for the Congress to form the government in the state with the support of Independents under the leadership of Mukul.

Mukul had claimed that he will decimate NPP completely, but could not do so in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls as Purno Sangma defeated Mukul’s son- in- law Darly Momin. Later in 2016, in the by-poll held for Tura Lok Sabha seat following the death of Purno, Conrad emerged victorious to the surprise of Mukul and in the 2018 Assembly polls, there was resurrection of NPP as the party improved the number of MLAs from 2 to 20.
