SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF) troops deployed in Jatrakona intercepted five trucks with 65 cattle on Sunday and detained 17 persons, all from Assam.
In a statement issued here, BSF said the detained persons, between the 19 and 60 years of age, were travelling from Goalpara in Assam towards the bordering area of West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills from Khanapara. “All these vehicles were transporting cattle very brutally with the intention to smuggle into Bangladesh,” the statement read.
“Sudden movement of cattle laden truck in such a number towards International border in West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills District has started after a gap of one year. We have alerted troops to be more vigilant to foil any such attempts,” said UK Nayal, DIG, PRO-BSF.
By the second week of April, BSF troops had made seizures worth more than Rs 1 crore which included 146 cattle, 3,14,370 biri bundles, 15,27,874 betel nuts packed in 98 cases and apprehended 17 Indians.
All confiscated items were handed over to the concerned department for further legal action.
