West Jaintia Hills assessing damage after storm

SHILLONG: The District Administration of West Jaintia Hills has communicated to the  Block Development Officers (BDOs) and Gram Sevaks to conduct an assessment in the district following the storm which lashed the district on Sunday.

Thunderstorm and rain in West Jaintia Hills damaged houses,  a church and uprooted trees leading to chaos on Sunday afternoon. Ummulong, Sabahmuswang, Mukhla, Khliehtyrshi and Jowai were the worst hit. The roof of a house at Caroline Colony in Jowai town was blown away by the storm and a church building at Dongmihsngi in Ummulong was partially damaged.

Uprooted trees blocked Jowai bypass and the national highway in Khliehtyrshi.

However, West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, C P Gotmare said that apart from the assessment, relief materials for the affected people would be issued.

Meanwhile, a similar storm hit the West Khasi Hills and damages were reported from two- three villages in the district.

The Deputy Commissioner,  T  Lyngwa asserted that he had sent his officers to conduct an assessment of the places where storm caused damages.

Meanwhile, Indian Meteorological Department says that thunderstorm accompanied with gusty wind and lighting is likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on Tuesday.

It also says that light to moderate rain and thundershower is very likely to occur at few places over most of the North Eastern states.
