SHILLONG: Meghalaya Government is examining the idea of creating a new district under the name South East Khasi Hills (SEKH) district in the state.
Informing this here on Tuesday, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma said that the Government always wanted to bring administration closer to the people but it was facing challenges in creating a new district because of financial issues
“Given an opportunity, we would like to do it but challenge has come because of financial issues. We would like to do it but also have to take into consideration the financial implications ,” he said.
Different leaders from Sohra and nearby areas are of the view that the proposed South East Khasi Hills district should comprise of areas like Sohra, Pynursal and Shella.
The last time when new districts were created in Meghalaya was in the year 2012 when the previous MUA Government had created four new districts including East Jaintia Hills, South West Khasi Hills, South West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills.
