SHILLONG: The North East Space Application Centre (NESAC) will prepare geospatial database inputs on planning and restoration of areas affected by coal mining in Jaintia Hills.
In this regard, fund was made available to it by Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board.
According to the second report of the NGT appointed committee, it appears that in respect of the Jaintia Hills, both East and West, NESAC has completed satellite data processing (merging of Panchromatic and Multispectral data); geo-referencing, ortho-rectification and re-sampling of satellite data; interpretation of road and settlement and preparation of GID lair of Coal Depot of Meghalaya and delineation of number of mini watersheds.
Updation of number of villages/settlement in consultation with the Public Health Engineering departments of West and East Jaintia Hills is yet to be done.
The interpretation of one season land use/land cover and delineation of number of mines with respect to mini watershed are in progress.
The report of the NGT panel said NESAC has assured the Committee that the entire work for Jaintia Hills district would be completed within a month and presentation of their findings would be made before the Committee in its proceeding scheduled to be held on April 25 in Shillong.
The Committee has also been apprised by NESAC that satellite data order of Nongjri and Jadigittim villages of South Garo Hills district, where there are coal mining activities, has also been placed with ISRO. After such satellite data are made available, the other steps required for preparation of Geospatial Database in respect of the villages would be taken.
