CM reviews storm damage in state

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma reviewed the situation arising out of the recent storm with all the Deputy Commissioners of the state on Tuesday.
Different districts of Garo Hills , Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills have witnessed destruction following the recent storm which hit the state for the last couple of days.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said that reports about the calamities are coming to him and he has instructed the DCs to give interim relief to those who have been affected.
He added that the Government last year had asked the Deputy Commissioners to prepare for any eventuality, adding that DCs were little hesitant to give relief initially because of the elections.
An amount of Rs 8 lakh has been earmarked for West Khasi Hills which also witnessed a storm recently.
Stating that damages have been reported from West Khasi Hills, South Garo Hills and East Garo Hills, he further informed that detailed assessment is being awaited.
After Jaintia Hills, thunderstorm and rain caused havoc in North Garo Hills and parts of West Khasi Hills on Monday. The early morning storm and heavy shower damaged houses and uprooted trees in the two districts.
In North Garo Hills, the storm accompanied by lightning started around 3 am. It affected thatched houses and blew away the roofs of several houses in Resubelpara, Jonglapara and Sualmari. No casualty was reported.
In Nongstoin, over 700 people have been affected by the storm and heavy rain. Schools, including KJP Synod Sepngi Higher Secondary School, and government offices were damaged and power supply was disrupted after trees fell on electric poles. One person was injured.
In West Jaintia Hills, many houses were damaged in places like Ummulong, Sabahmuswang, Mukhla, Khliehtyrshi and Jowai and the national highway Khliehtyrshi was blocked by uprooted trees on Sunday.
