TURA: Several Garo Hills organisations have assured their support for their counterparts in Shillong for a statewide Black Day protest on April 23 in protest against the failure of the state government to implement Inner Line Permit to check influx in Meghalaya.
The vice-chairman of Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organizations (CoMSO) Nikman Marak informed that Garo Hills based groups will actively participate in the black day protest in this part of the region on the scheduled day.
“Time and again we have been demanding ILP in Meghalaya. We have submitted numerous memorandums and petitions to successive governments but nothing positive has come from the authorities,” complained Nikman.
He said that influx from neighbouring states and even illegal immigrants from across the international border are a worrying factor for the inhabitants of the state and a threat to the tribal population.
“It is because of the rising threat from influx and failure of the government to put in place a mechanism to stop it that we as NGOs are being compelled to rise up in protest,” added Nikman.
Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) on Monday issued a statement that it will hold a Black Flag Day in the state on April 23 in protest against the delay in implementing inner line permit (ILP).
The members will pin black ribbons on the public, display public flags on cars, carry flex in demand for ILP will be written.
