GUWAHATI: An Assam police constable was allegedly shot at by the personal security officer of Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) chairman, Dr Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, at Palashbari in Kamrup district on Wednesday night, police sources said.
Batiram Das (53), the constable, suffered a bullet injury in his leg, when the PSO, Pradip Choudhury, who was allegedly in an inebriated condition, went berserk and haphazardly fired shots from his pistol at Kallapara village under Palashbari police station around 10.30 pm on Wednesday.
A 14-year-old girl was also injured in the shootout.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on Thursday, Palashbari officer in-charge, Satyendra Singh Hazari, informed that an argument over vehicle parking triggered the incident.
“An argument over vehicle parking near a function at the village infuriated the Meghalaya policeman who thereafter brought his pistol and fired shots waywardly at people who had come to the function, injuring the constable and the minor girl, who had come from Guwahati for the function, in the process,” Hazari said.
Palashbari is about 27km by road to the west of Guwahati.
A case has been registered at Palashbari police station against Choudhury, who is reported to have fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Residents of the area have demanded an investigation into the incident by the Kamrup district administration.
