TURA: The committee spearheading the demand for making Dadenggre civil sub-division, the oldest sub-division in Garo Hills, into a full-fledged district has called upon the Meghalaya Government to ensure impartiality while dealing with the issue.

The Dadenggre District Demand Committee, in a statement to the media, took note of the recent statement of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma wherein the latter had mentioned that his government was ‘examining’ the creation of a new district in the Khasi Hills region.

“But the statement has excluded the Garo Hills region where the oldest sub-division remains to be upgraded. We are displeased with the statement of the chief minister because we have been demanding district status for Dadenggre for many years,” stated the demand committee.

The members of the committee have called upon the government to ensure creation of new districts should be without any partiality adding, “If the government of Meghalaya was to create a district in Khasi Hills then the same should also be done in the Garo Hills region too, without any partiality and for the better interest of the people of the state.”

Dadenggre in West Garo Hills district, besides being the oldest civil sub-division, also happens to be the place through which one of the very first motorable roads from Assam connected the region, many decades ago.

Blessed with fertile soil, vast areas of the sub-division have turned into plantations of the spice pepper, arecanut, pineapples, providing much needed revenue from this part of the state.
