SHILLONG: Meghalaya Government will allot quarters to as many as 128 employees of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) once its office is shifted to the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) building near the Chief Secretary’s residence at Bivar Road here.
Speaking to newsmen here on Friday, Urban Affairs Minister and member of the High Level Committee looking into the issue of Harijan Colony, Hamlet Dohling, said the department is awaiting the reply of the General Administrative Department to shift the SMB office to the MBDA building after which the present office of the Board will be turned into quarters for the 128 SMB employees.
The SMB office is currently functioning from buildings meant for quarters for the employees at Bivar road and the state government intends to shift it to the MBDA building located nearby.
Stating that he cannot say much as the issue is still in the court, Dohling, however, added that the meeting of the High Level Committee will be held in the first week of May to discuss the matter.
To a query if the employees refuse to shift, Dohling said since they are SMB employees, they should obey the order.
“We are working on a solution and we are serious and we want to complete our work at the earliest,” Dohling added.
The High Level Committee was constituted to find a solution to the relocation issue of Harijan Colony following an altercation between few people that had spiralled into unrest in the city.
