KHADC sets up panel on Sixth Schedule

SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is all set for a holistic approach to understand the provisions of the Sixth Schedule and legislate thereon in the interest of the people.
An Advisory Committee on Legislation and Legal Issue has been constituted to study, deliberate on the Sixth Schedule and its provisions and recommend it to the executive committee to bring in good legislation.
“Being the chairman endorsed by the resolution of the district council I have constituted a new committee know as Advisory Committee on Legislation and Legal issue,” said Chairman of KHADC, PN Syiem.
Informing about this he said that the members of the committee include KHADC Chairman Deputy Chairman as the vice chairman and secretary as the member secretary besides academicians and resource person.
He also pointed out that it is important to understand the Sixth Schedule and its provisions to act and legislate accordingly.
) Stating that as of now they have not been making use of the provisions for their interest, Syiem said, “The intention of the Advisory committee is to see that we can recommend to the executive committee to bring in good legislation so that we can take care of our interest”.
Asked when it is likely for the committee to submit its recommendation to the Executive Council, Syiem said, “We have to conduct a series of meetings and it will not just be of the committee members… we will have to conduct seminars, conference, convention, general discussions with students of different institutions, academicians and traditional heads”.
