SOHBAR: The Sohbar Sirdarship is renowned for its famous tourist attraction – the arch bridge and a place called Therriaghat known for its geological significance. Yet Sohbar faces a major problem in the form of bad road connectivity.
Travelling on the unpaved approach road can be quite uncomfortable to most people as vehicles have to manoeuvre through the dirt road dotted with water-logged potholes.
However, the scenic greenery and the view of Bangladesh provides a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment to travelers.
What is admirable though is that both domestic and foreign tourists tend to overlook the problem and make it a point to visit the place on a regular basis.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Donald Shullai, a member of the dorbar shnong committee and Sohbar Sirdarship Elaka, said that tourists provide the locals with a chance to earn a livelihood.
Meanwhile, secretary of Elaka Sohbar, Ksanlang Kharshiing said that the unpaved road will be black-topped by September as per talks with the Executive Engineer of Sohra Division from the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY Phase II).
He said that the sanction will be made for which tender will be called.
“On the part of the village, we urge the contractors who will be working on the road to speed up the road construction,” he said.
He said that tourists often complain about the road and this led the village heads into taking the matter to the concerned authorities.
