Assam Police recover stolen idol of Ugratara Temple

GUWAHATI: Assam Police have recovered the ancient idol that was stolen from age-old Ugratara Temple here five months and sixteen days back.

Acting on a specific tip-off, a team of Golaghat district police led by Additional Superintendent of Police Surjit Singh Paneswar, has recovered the eight-metal alloy idol from Samata in Nalbari district of Assam on Wednesday.

Police have arrested four of the gang allegedly involved in the theft of the ancient idol. The arrested criminals were identified as Shan Ali, Adil Ali, Rahul Ali and Mintu Rai.

The ASP Paneswar informed that more persons were likely to be arrested. The recovered idol has been identified by the head priest of Ugratara Temple. The stolen idol was kept hidden under water of a pond.

It may be mentioned that the stolen idol has been recovered just a day before  a new idol which has been made at Kolkata, was to be set up at the ancient temple here.

The recovery of the idol has created an atmosphere of jubilation in the temple where devotees have started celebrating the occasion.
