SHILLONG: A workshop on Self Help Group (SHG) bank linkage portal interest subvention organised by the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society (MSRLS) at State Convention Center on Thursday highlighted the need to focus on private sector instead of government jobs.
Speaking at the workshop, Commissioner and Secretary of the Finance Department, Vijay Kumar said the private sector has to be robust and urged the youth to go for entrepreneurship rather than government jobs.
He raised a concern that credit is a massive challenge in the North East.
Turning to the state of Meghalaya, access to credit has to be made at the village level also, he added.
Kumar informed that the state government has been able to link 1600 SHGs with banks and credit worth Rs 12 crore has been awarded to the SHGs.
He informed that by this year, the target of the government is Rs 50 crore of credit.
With the North Eastern states producing scented rice, kiwis, honey and others, Vijay Kumar said the region can play the value game instead of the volume game.
