SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has termed as ‘heavy exercise’ the amendment to Meghalaya Residents and Security Act to address the issue of influx.
Though the draft of the amended Act was ready, the state government has again wanted more points to be included in the Act.
“A heavy exercise is going on as the existing Act needs to be strengthened further so that we can fulfill the objective of protecting the people by looking into the illegal immigration issue”, the chief minister told reporters on Thursday.
According to the chief minister, it would be important not to rush as a very solid structure is coming up and it is in an advanced stage.
The pressure groups had demanded four provisions of ILP to be included in the Residents Act. According to the organisations, no one will be allowed to enter or settle in the state without the permission of the state. The persons will also have to inform about the number of days they will stay.
Another provision is to penalize any person who enters the state illegally.
Besides, no one should be allowed to stay beyond 179 days.
