SHILLONG: The Ri-Bhoi Youth Organization (RBYO) has called for empowerment of the Dorbar Shnong in an effort to curb influx of illegal immigrants who are engaged as labourers, traders and settle in and around Ri-Bhoi District.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, president of RBYO, Baïateilang Lapang said that a delegation of RBYO met the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Teiñwell Dkhar in this regard.
According to Lapang, stringent laws should be legislated by the district council to keep a watch on the activities of the Dorbar Shnong alleging they give refuge to illegal migrants in their respective villages.
General secretary Kronding Nongbsap warned the Dorbar Shnong against giving shelter to illegal immigrants.
“It is the Dorbar Shnong who should take the initiative to check influx.’’
“If the Dorbar Shnong continues to give refuge to illegal immigrants, we will complain to the Dorbar of Syiem Hima Mylliem and KHADC,” the general secretary said.
