In our last edition, we published information related to career options after senior secondary. This time, we will talk about few more options. Aspirants and guardians must follow the updates from institutes and government departments as there might be changes in syllabus or patterns of entrances or eligibility. Whenever there are changes information is passed through advertisements or other means.
Medical Entrance: Admission in medical colleges in India is done through national level entrance like National Entrance and Eligibility Test (NEET). Students may appear for NEET after Class XII. Science students with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or other may appear for this entrance. AIIMS and JIPMER also conduct entrances at national level. One should be careful before taking admission in private medical colleges or colleges outside India. Interested students may visit the official websites of Medical Council of India. Like MBBS, there are other courses like BDS, Ayurveda, etc.
Nursing: In nursing, one can do courses like B Sc, GNM, ANM, etc. After passing Class XII students can take admission in nursing courses. For BSc, students must be from science background and for GNM it is preferable to be from science stream. However, students from arts stream may also take admission in GNM and ANM courses. For guidelines and to look at the status of affiliation of various nursing schools or colleges interested may visit the official website of Nursing Council of India.
Paramedics: There are courses related to paramedics like lab technician or ICU technician. One may also choose courses related to physiotherapy and allied health courses. Students may also explore courses related to Yoga or Naturopathy.
Hospitality Courses: Interested students can opt for some courses in hospitality sector like courses in travel and tourism, air hostage, beauty and wellness. Students should be good in communication skill apart from other required soft skills. There are government affiliated institutes and many are privately managed institutes which offer courses related to hospitality.
Social Work: One can join bachelor level courses on social work. The course is known as BA in Social Work or Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). Many universities conduct BSW courses in the country. BSW is graduate level courses; similarly there is course like MSW which can be joined after graduation.
Five-year integrated course: Traditionally students join college as part of their graduation, which is mostly for three years and after finishing graduation, one does post graduation as part of the higher studies. Integrated courses help students as they remain focused on particular subjects. Some of the popular five-year integrated courses are in Law, Development Studies, Commerce, Mathematics, Social Work, etc.
BA/B Sc/B Com: Bachelor level courses are available in most of the colleges the country. After passing senior secondary many take admission in three-year courses under various universities. Popular subjects are Economics, Political Science, History, Accountancy, Zoology, Botany, etc. Admissions are on the basis of marks obtained in Class XII final exam. Some colleges might conduct admission test for admission.
