TURA: A Don Bosco School student from Tura who had made it to the top ten in the Class X Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examinations two years ago, has once again brought fame to Garo Hills by being the sole candidate in this year’s state list in the HSSLC examination in Science results of which were declared on Wednesday by MBoSE.
Seventeen-year -old Rahul Sen was the only candidate to represent Garo Hills in the top ten list as he secured the 5th position.
Rahul had secured the second position in the state in the 2017 SSLC exams with letter marks in six subjects.
This year, the Salesian-run St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School in Shillong outshone every other school in the state as eight of its students made it to the top ten list in Science, including the first position taken by Debjanee Bhattacharjee.
The results have brought a smile to the young topper and his family and the entire Don Bosco fraternity.
Rahul’s parents are both teachers. His father Subrata Sen teaches science in the same school while his mother Manika Sen mentors him at home.
“I am very happy with the results and my success is due to the blessings of the Almighty, my parents, teachers and all my friends and well-wishers. I always believed in myself and did not lose focus in my studies and during the examinations,” an elated Rahul told The Shillong Times at his humble home on the premises of the premier educational institute in Tura’s Sampalgre (Chandmari) locality on Wednesday.
Passionate about science, Rahul says that his ambition in life is to be in academics and follow in the footsteps of his parents.
“I am planning to join Cotton College in Guwahati and take up Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) with specialization in Mathematics,” says a confident Rahul.
His secret to success is all about studying regularly. “Though I love playing table tennis and cricket and devote time to extra-curricular activities, I also make it a point to focus on my books regularly. I go through my books for about two hours in the evening and another three hours early in the morning when it is quiet,” revealed Rahul.
A supportive father, Subrata Sen says that the young boy has always been disciplined and obedient. “He would take up the challenge and do the tasks all by himself. Only when in doubt would he come to me or the teachers. I am very proud of him,” he said.
