Security beefed up at Assam-Meghalaya border

SHILLONG: Ri Bhoi police have beefed up security along the inter-state border at Balakhawa village in Ri Bhoi following the recent assault on the secretary of the Hima Nongspung.
Ri Bhoi SP C Syrti said that police personnel have been deployed in the village to maintain law and order in the area.
Last week, a group of people allegedly vandalised the residence of Michael Warjri, secretary of Hima Nongspung.
As per reports, the house was attacked because
) of Warjri’s opposition to the ongoing construction of a PMGSY road at Balakhawa by the Assam government.
Later, Warjri was arrested by Assam Police and a case was registered against him while pressure groups here in Meghalaya demanded that the case should be forwarded to Nongpoh Police station.
Meanwhile, Syrti also informed that the he has requested the Deputy Commissioner of the district to constitute a peace committee in the area.
Skirmishes along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border have been reported in the past and it is not uncommon for clashes to occur from time to time.
