BJP hands over representation to Raj Guv against rising crime
Jaipur: The BJP on Sunday staged a demonstration and handed over a representation to Governor Kalyan Singh here against rising incidents of crime against Dalits and women in the state. A delegation of the party led by its state president, Madan Lal Saini, handed over a representation to the governor and requested him to forward a detailed report of the state government’s “failure in maintaining law and order”. The delegation also handed over two lists of crime against women and Dalits reported recently. In the representation, the BJP cited the example of the recent gan-grape of a Dalit woman in Alwar and said that the government failed to maintain law and order and the crime against women and Dalits have increased. Earlier in the day, scores of the party workers demonstrated at the civil lines railway crossing here. (PTI)
Death penalty demanded for rape accused in J-K
Srinagar: Protesters blocked a highway in the Shadipora area of Bandipora district in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday demanding death penalty for a man accused of raping a three-year-old girl of Trehgam village on Thursday. The accused, Tahir Ahmad Mir, has been arrested. According to the police, Mir had produced a certificate showing him as a minor, which authorities said was fake since he is 20 years old. Shahbaz Mir, Bandipora District Magistrate assured protesters of a fast-track trial, which would be completed within 14 days. After the assurance, protesters dispersed peacefully. (IANS)
Pilgrim killed in Kedarnath
Dehradun: A woman pilgrim was killed in Kedarnath after being struck by a rock during the ongoing Chardham Yatra in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, authorities said on Sunday. According to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the victim, Ojaswi (28), a resident of Malerkotla, Punjab, was hit by the rock on Saturday between the Rambara and Lincholi areas. She succumbed to her grievous head injuries later in the day. With intermittent snowfall continuing to lash Kedarnath since Saturday, SDRF personnel have been put on alert to provide medical and other assistance to pilgrims. “We have asked our SDRF personnel to remain alert and provide all sorts of help to pilgrims,” said Ashok Kumar, Director General (DG) Law and Order. Despite the snowfall, the pilgrimage to the four shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri that began last week, has gained momentum, said Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee Chairman Mohan Prasad Thapliyal. On an average, nearly 15,000 pilgrims are visiting the Badrinath and Kedarnath temples daily. “Till Saturday, 31,801 pilgrims had already visited Badrinath temple,” said Thapliyal. Similarly, nearly 6,000 pilgrims were visiting the two shrines of Gangotri and Yamunotri in Uttarkashi district every day. (IANS)
Militants killed in J-K encounter
Srinagar: Two militants were Sunday killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, an army official said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Hindsitapur area of Shopian district in south Kashmir following specific information about the presence of militants there, the official said. As the forces were conducting the search operations, the militants fired upon them, which led to a gun battle in which the two militants were killed, he said. Weapons and other materials have been seized from the site of the encounter, the official added. He said the operation is in progress. (PTI)
Teachers held for fake degrees
Muzaffarnagar (UP): Five teachers of government primary schools were booked for cheating and forgery in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district after their degrees were found to be fake, police said on Sunday. According to district elementary education officer Gita Verma, B.Ed certificates of the five teachers were allegedly found to be fake during an inquiry held on Saturday. The accused had submitted fake B.Ed certificates of Agra University and were employed as teachers for many years, Verma said. The UP education department has directed officials for recovery of the salary drawn by the accused during service, the officer added. (PTI)
Illicit foreign liquor busted
New Delhi: Sleuths of Delhi excise department have unearthed a syndicate involved in supply of illicit foreign liquor in several areas of the city, an official said on Sunday. According to the department, liquor bottles of around 17 foreign premium brands have been seized following the arrest of two persons – Sanjay Goel and Dayanand. The official said that a tip off was received that some persons are involved in a racket and supplying illegal foreign illegal liquor in Punjabi Bagh and Rajouri Garden area. “A trap was laid in Punjabi Bagh on Saturday. A person namely Sanjay Goel was apprehended, when he was transporting illegal foreign illegal liquor on a scooty,” he said. “During interrogation, Goel told that main supplier is Dayanand. Goel led the raiding party of department to a parking area in West Punjabi Bagh, where another accused Dayanand was found present along with a large quantity of foreign liquor stocked there. “They could not produce any authentic document or reason for storing as well as selling the foreign liquor from this premises,” official also said. A case under the Delhi Excise Act at Punjabi Bagh was registered on Saturday. (PTI)
