SHILLONG: The HNLC has taken responsibility for killing Pynursla businessman Romeo Lyngdoh while terming his assassination as a death penalty.
The general secretary cum publicity secretary of HNLC, Sainkupar Nongtraw, in a statement to the media on Tuesday, admitted that their cadres were responsible for the death of Lyngdoh due to his involvement in activities against the HNLC and the people.
“He was a sanctioned agent who worked as a police informer, he was paid handsomely and was instrumental in recruiting informers for the state police locally and also from Bangladesh. We had been hunting for him from 2008 and finally he fell to our bullets on the night of May 12,”the HNLC leader said.
The HNLC also claimed that in 2016 when their cadres were arrested in Pynursla along with IEDs, Lyngdoh was the one who had provided information to the police about their cadres because they had reserved his car not knowing that he was a police informer, adding the police had been using him all the while and he was in their payroll.
The HNLC also warned those who are working with police department and intelligence branch of the police.
Stating that the HNLC is determined to eliminate all those who were responsible for the death of many cadres, Nongtraw added that the outfit would not reveal the names of people on their hit list. “We will hit first and then make our claims”, the HNLC said.
Police sources said Lyngdoh was served with a ransom by the HNLC last month and he had links with the outfit.
Sources from the police added that in May 2016, a group of rebels from HNLC and ULFA-I were arrested with weapons and explosives after they failed to carry out a bomb blast in Shillong and the militants at that time were using the vehicle of Lyngdoh. Sources added that as soon as the police received information that a group of HNLC and ULFA men were planning to carry out a bomb blast at Khyndailad, police swung into action.
Seeing the police presence in Shillong, the militants aborted their plan and they were intercepted at Pynursla by the police leading to their arrest while they were proceeding towards their hideouts in Bangladesh.
Senior ULFA-I cadre, Bikhat Ahom of Assam’s Bongaigaon area, was also arrested along with three other rebels.
Ahom is a bomb expert and is wanted by Assam police for several bombings and other criminal activities in Assam. Reacting to a query, sources added that the HNLC militants are camping in Bangladesh and their strength may be around twenty.
