SHILLONG:  Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar said the Meghalaya government should take up developmental activities along the inter-state border areas.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “On a visit to Belakhowa, I understood that there are people who want development and welcome the developmental activities initiated by Assam. But there are people who oppose it.”

According to him, the state government should take up developmental activities in the border areas so that the people are not tempted to seek development from the neighbouring state administration.  He asserted that Belkhowa is a village well within the boundaries of Meghalaya and does not fall under Assam.

“We need sanction from the Central government to get road connectivity which will benefit the border areas,” Tongkhar said.

He said the issue of inter-state border was in the heart of HSPDP and pointed to the need to get a solution to the lingering border dispute issue.
