GUWAHATI: Police have arrested one more person in connection with the physical torture and detention of an elderly couple at a village near the Assam-Meghalaya border.

A team from Boko police station arrested Pivarson R Marak, who is alleged to have incited a mob to drag the couple, Luind Sangma (79) and Pritila Sangma (65), out of their house at Da-gaon and attack them on the pretext that they were practicing “black magic”.

“Marak was arrested on the basis of a tip-off today. However, we are on the lookout for the main accused, Gridison Marak, a quack who is absconding,” Jogendra Barman, officer-in-charge of Boko police station told The Shillong Times on Thursday.

The number of arrests made in the case has gone up to 10, which also includes a woman.

Police had rescued the couple on May 12 and made arrangements for their treatment at the Boko primary health centre and Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.

“Currently, we have made arrangements for their stay in their relative’s place,” Barman said.

Da-gaon, located near the inter-state border, is about 25km from Boko town in Kamrup district.
