SHILLONG: As many as eight cardiac surgeries were conducted in NEIGRIHMS on Wednesday thanks to the mediation of Chief Secretary P S Thangkhiew.
The chief secretary had on Tuesday held a meeting with NEIGRIHMS Director D M Thappa and Head of Cardiology Department Animesh Mishra to ensure that the patients do not suffer due to the differences between the two doctors.
The mediation meeting was held after the Union Health Secretary informed the chief secretary to resolve the matter at the earliest.
“Our concern is that people should not suffer due to the internal matters in NEIGRIHMS”, the chief secretary said.
Following the intervention of the state government, the union government had taken a serious note of the standoff between the Director and the Head of Department of Cardiology.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Wednesday that the state government, 7-8 months back, had approached the Union government about the problems in NEIGRIHMS and the Centre was requested to resolve the issue. The chief minister said he along with the Health Minister A L Hek had visited New Delhi on several occasions and met officials as well as the Union Health Minister to apprise them about the issues in the institute.
Terming the recent incident in the institute as unfortunate, he added that the patients have suffered due to the ongoing crisis, adding that the government followed all the directions of the High Court and officers were deployed in the institute the very next day to ensure that operations start immediately.
Stating that there is a technical problem which the Union government is facing, he, however, added that attempts are being made to resolve the problem.
It was informed that some cardiac devices and medicines are available in Amrit pharmacy while the remaining needs to be brought from outside.
