TURA: The A’chik Youth Welfare Organization has issued a general alert to the public of Garo Hills to be vigil as it calls for steps to check the large scale movement of petty traders who go ‘house calling’ to different villages and towns to sell their wares cautioning that such visits give an opportunity for criminals to commit crime.
Reacting to recent incidents involving outsiders, including last week’s molestation of a woman patient by a AYUSH doctor in South Garo Hills, the AYWO organization alleged that crimes against locals are being perpetrated by outsiders who have an easy access to the villages.
“The antecedents of outsiders’ needs to be checked thoroughly and all the local development committees as well as youth clubs need to remain vigilant about the visits by door to door hawkers some of whom might take the opportunity to commit crime,” cautioned the organization.
It noted that dozens of traders are visiting villages across the Garo Hills and going house to house to sell their produce which it termed “illegal”.
“Hawkers license from GHADC doesn’t permit them to visit homes. They are meant to do business in one place which is usually a selected market place. By moving from one place to another they are depriving the district council of its revenue and some are taking the opportunity to commit crime,” warned the AYWO as it urged for the public to be vigilant.
