SHILLONG: Shillong Police busted a gold smuggling racket and arrested four people from Mawlai recently.
Police also recovered Rs 59 lakh and 450 grams of gold from their possession. The money was from the sale of gold. They were part of an inter-state gold smuggling racket.
East Khasi Hills SP Claudia Lyngwa said that the police do not handle cases relating to gold and on praying before the Court it agreed to hand over the case to Customs.
Stating that the arrested people were from border areas, she said that now even drugs seem to be coming by this route of the state as the Rohingya frequently go to Myanmar and bring it to Bangladesh.
Police suspect that the gold and drugs are being supplied from Bangladesh since Meghalaya shares a huge border with the country.
It may be mentioned that Meghalaya shares 443 km of international border with Bangladesh a large part of which is unfenced
