SHILLONG: The Department of Environment & Traditional Ecosystems of Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), Shillong under the banner of Meghalaya Integrated Mountain Development Initiative (MIMDI) in collaboration with the office of the State Mission Director, Swachh Bharat Mission will conduct ‘The Himalayan Clean-up’ campaign on Saturday at Dainthlen in Sohra to make a tangible difference to the cause of solid waste management in the Indian Himalayan Region.
MIMDI will join hands with the state chapters of Integrated Mountain Initiative in all the eleven states including the Northeastern region on that day to create awareness on the ill-effects of single use plastics harming the aesthetics, tourist locations and natural bodies like rivers in Sohra area.
The event forms a part of our community engagement initiatives where waste collection, segregation and brand auditing of the waste collected from the area would be carried out to ascertain the degree of pollution caused by the non-biodegradable products and the brands contributing mostly to it. The department had carried out such exercise last year in Police Bazaar in Shillong whose findings were presented subsequently to the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change.
