Twist in ex-Army man case

GUWAHATI: In yet another twist in the case of former Indian Army honorary lieutenant, Mohammad Sana Ullah, three “witnesses” have lodged separate first information reports (FIR) against the inquiry officer of Assam Police border branch, claiming their statements were never recorded by him in connection with the case.

Md Kuran Ali of Kolohikash village under Chaygaon revenue circle, where Sana Ullah hails from, on Sunday filed an FIR at Boko police station against Chandramal Das, the inquiry officer, stating that he was never informed that he was a witness in the case.

“The signature in the statement is forged, as I had not signed as a witness. Given that a criminal conspiracy has been hatched against the former Army officer, we demand that the inquiry officer be punished,” Ali stated in the FIR.

Two others, Md Subahan Ali and Ajmal Ali, also from Koloikash village, lodged separate cases at Boko police station on Sunday, stating though their names appear in the case (number 1978/16/FT) they neither gave any statement nor signed as witnesses.

The witnesses further said they came to know about their names being attached to the case through the media only.

Boko police station officer in-charge, Jogendra Barman said that investigation into the matter has begun and that he would personally handle the case.

It may be mentioned that the inquiry officer in the case, Das had admitted before a television channel here that he never met Sana Ullah and that the person he enquired was not him but a daily wage labourer.

Mohammad Sanaullah, 51, who had served the Indian Army for three decades since 1987, was arrested by North Guwahati police last month after the Boko Foreigner’s Tribunal declared him a “foreign national”. He is currently lodged at a detention centre in Goalpara.

Family members of Sana Ullah, who have subsequently challenged the tribunal’s order in the Gauahati High Court, had blamed the Assam Police Border Organisation for allegedly conspiring against genuine Indian citizens in the name of detecting D-Voters.

“In the Foreigners Tribunal, we have already contended that the case against him is fabricated and holds no truth as at the time the police claimed to have taken his statement he was deployed in counter-insurgency operations in Manipur,’ Sana Ullah’s advocate, Aman Wadue, told the media.
