SHILLONG: The police are probing whether there is any religious angle to the incident at Kongthong village in Sohra where there was clash between two Sordars.
When contacted, a police official said a case has been registered following the FIR filed by Tui Khongsit.
The FIR alleged that a group of people led by the elders of Kongthong Church had vandalised and desecrated the sanctum, ‘Niang Pyrhai’, however, the church has clarified that it was not at all involved.
“We are still verifying as some say it is related to Shad Shnong (village dance). The other groups say it is a dance of the Raid Kongthong”, a police official said.
Moreover, another claim is about the dance of the indigenous religion of the Khasis,” the official added.
He said the police are still working to verify the claims of the groups whether it is a religious dance (Shad Niam) or Shad Raid (Raid dance).
The official further said Sylloklang Majaw got the approval and Sanad to be the Sordar of Raid Kongthong whereas Kanol Majaw has not received it.
There were allegations that Sylloklang and others have stopped the people from performing the religious ceremonies of the Khasi indigenous religion.
On the other hand, the department will ensure that no religious differences take place.
