TURA: Members of the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) who had called for a two-day office picketing of the government run College of Teachers’ Education (B. Ed) at Rongkhon, Tura demanding the number of accommodating seats be raised from fifty to hundred, have called off their stir on Monday.
The Chairman of the GSMC, Nikman Ch Marak informed that the withdrawal of the protest was taken after a discussion with the college authorities.
“We had called for the protest because there was no reply from the government to our memorandum submitted last month. Our demand was to raise the seat capacity to one hundred. The principal of the college briefed us that the matter has to be taken up by both the Centre and State governments. For his part he has informed us that he will be writing to the authorities on the issue,” said Marak.
On the demand for raising the number of vacant seats for local indigenous candidates, the GSMC was informed that the allotted seats were in accordance with the reservation policy in the state.
“Since the reservation criteria need to be followed, the allotted seats have to be given accordingly. However, we were told that five extra seats are now being given for the local indigenous candidates, which is a welcome sign and hence we are withdrawing our protest,” the GSMC said.
